Introduction to the American Civil War:

            From 1861 to around 1865, the Unites States was torn in two by an all by infamous battle called the Civil War that resulted primarily by the issue of slavery. Many other factors did contribute to the over all war, but as a reader, most people only know that that Civil War was the war the freed the slaves, but in fact it did much more than that. There were numerous disagreements between the North and the South and they had been smoldering under the layer of slavery since the end of the American Revolution. Decade by decade, the United States slowly started to lose their faith on the Southern and Northern ideas, and the time had come for something to be done. At this time, the northern factions began to fear that those highly powered individuals supporting slavery had too much control on our nation’s government, and the South feared losing their control to antislavery and abolitionist forces.

            But the southern states thought that they could have a comeback, instead of subsiding slavery in the South, the decided to light a flame underneath it and watch it spread. With the newly acquired west lands, such as Missouri and Kansas, the Southern factions felt that slavery should be allowed in these new undecided territories, but the abolitionist northerners were against it.  This dispute and the soon to happen election on president Abraham Lincoln was what finally led to the secession of the southern territory. But the question was not weather they was going to be a civil war, but rather if they North and South could be Civil about it.

Conclusion that Relates to the Bigger Picture:

            During the war, the North had many advantages over the South, this including population, which is a strong sense for military enlistees and civilian manpower. The South lacked the substantial number of factories and industries of the North those producted war materials. The North had a more proficient transportation network, which could easily re-supply military forces in the field. Even though the South did not have many advantages, the ones they did have were very substantial.  One large part was that the southerners were able to fight on their own terrain, and they had a stronger military tradition, naming most of their men ex-military. This gave them a large advantage under the command of Robert E. Lee, and Joseph Jackson.

            But in the end, the North knew what it took to take the war into their hands. They knew right from the beginning that they needed to have control over the Mississippi River, for trades and supplies, then they had to make sure that the South was cut off from international traders that could aid their effort, and finally, the Confederate army had to be taken out of action to prevent further northward attaches. This tactic in the end was the way that the North won the war. The South ultimately did not accomplish its goals for the war and after around 4 tiresome years of fighting, the North took the strong hold.

"...but one of them would make war rather than let the

nation survive, and the other would accept war

rather than let it perish, and the war came."

 "We made a great mistake in the beginning of our

struggle, and I fear, in spite of all we can do, it will prove to

be a fatal mistake. We appointed all our worst generals to

command our armies, and all our best generals to edit the newspapers"

" All warfare is based on deception. Hense, when able to attack,

we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive;

when we are near, we must make the enemy believe

we are far away; when far away; we must make him believe we are near."
